The world becomes more human when we meet it.
Travel has convinced me that understanding grows when we encounter people, cultures and places for ourselves. A map can tell us where a country is. A headline can tell us what happened there. But walking its streets, hearing its voices, sharing its food and seeing ordinary life can change the way we understand the people who live there.
My hope is that these pages do more than show where I have been. I hope they encourage someone else to choose a place, learn about it, and go.
A little orientation
A gateway to the Finger Lakes
Canandaigua is a city in Ontario County in New York’s Finger Lakes region, at the northern end of Canandaigua Lake. The area combines a small-city center with lake country, farms, wineries, parks and the broader landscape of western New York.
For someone visiting the region, Canandaigua can work as both a destination and a base for exploring the Finger Lakes. The scale is very different from London or Paris, which is exactly why it belongs in a travel story about the variety of places that shape us.
My connection
An early home
Canandaigua is part of my childhood geography—one of the places that belongs to the beginning of my personal map rather than simply a later trip.
That is another idea I want these pages to express: travel is not only about distant countries. Sometimes understanding how places shape us begins by looking carefully at the places where we first learned what “home” meant.
