The world becomes more human when we meet it.
Travel has convinced me that understanding grows when we encounter people, cultures and places for ourselves. A map can tell us where a country is. A headline can tell us what happened there. But walking its streets, hearing its voices, sharing its food and seeing ordinary life can change the way we understand the people who live there.
My hope is that these pages do more than show where I have been. I hope they encourage someone else to choose a place, learn about it, and go.

Ancient history, living country
Greece sits at the crossroads of Europe and the eastern Mediterranean, with a mainland and thousands of islands. Its ancient sites are extraordinary, but Greece is not a museum: modern cities, villages, islands, food, music and daily life are equally important parts of understanding the country.
For travelers interested in ideas, Greece offers a rare experience—standing near places associated with philosophy, theater, politics and mythology while also meeting the contemporary culture that has grown around and beyond them.

The long conversation of civilization
Greece connects naturally with many things that have interested me throughout my life: theater, ideas, democracy, mythology, history and the ways human beings have tried to understand themselves.
My own photographs and more of my personal story will be added here. I want them to sit beside the larger invitation: go see the places where old ideas were born, then meet the people who live there now.
