The world becomes more human when we meet it.
Travel has convinced me that understanding grows when we encounter people, cultures and places for ourselves. A map can tell us where a country is. A headline can tell us what happened there. But walking its streets, hearing its voices, sharing its food and seeing ordinary life can change the way we understand the people who live there.
My hope is that these pages do more than show where I have been. I hope they encourage someone else to choose a place, learn about it, and go.
A little orientation
More than a destination
Hawaiʻi is an island chain in the central Pacific and the 50th U.S. state, but reducing it to a vacation destination misses much of what makes it extraordinary. Native Hawaiian culture, language, history, land and ocean are part of the experience, and travelers gain more when they arrive with curiosity and respect.
For a first trip, even a single island can open many different worlds: city life, beaches, mountains, historic places, music, food, science, art and communities whose relationship with the islands reaches far deeper than tourism.
My connection
Several chapters of my life
Hawaiʻi has been part of my life in several chapters. I lived there in the 1980s, returned in 2011 and again in 2019. Each period belongs to a different part of my life, which is why this page is being built to hold more than one photo story.
I hope there is another chapter soon. I also hope the Hawaiian websites I have built become part of the road back—not only as projects, but as another way of staying connected with a place that has meant a great deal to me.

Don't only read about the world.
Pick a place that has always made you curious. Learn a little about its history and people. Make the trip when you can. Be respectful, ask questions, listen, notice ordinary life—and bring home more than photographs.
